Technical Events

StockCaster.Net provides a variety of technical scans. The logic for these scans is provided below:

Initial Trend Signals: These often indicate the beginning of a positive trend in a stock. A stock is classified within the initial phase if the previous period's closing price is less than the lower Bollinger band and the current period's closing price is greater than current period's lower Bollinger band. The second scan in the Initial sequence occurs when the last period's closing price is less than the 13 exponential moving average (EMA) and the present period's closing price is greater than the 13 EMA. The final Initial signal occurs when the previous time period's 3 EMA is less than the previous period's 13 EMA and the current period's 3 EMA value is greater than the current period's 13 EMA. Each of these scans, indicates an initial trend reversal, no matter the time period. StockCaster portrays these, and other similar scans, across multiple time periods (hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly periods) to support near-term and longer term analysis.

Intermediate Trend Signals: This marks the middle of an impulse movement in the stock. A stock can be classified as intermediate if the previous period's closing price is less than the previous period's 26 EMA and the current period's closing price is greater than the current period's 26 EMA. The second intermediate signal is noted when the previous period's 13 EMA is less than the previous period's 26 EMA and the current period's 13 EMA is greater than the current period's 26 EMA. The last intermediate signal occurs when the previous period's closing price is less than the previous period's 50 EMA and the current period's closing price is greater than the current month's 50 EMA.

Extensional Trend Signals: Extensional signals are (ideally) those which indicate movement into Elliot Wave 5. Such an event marks a positive long-term trend in a stock and seeks to identify the last leg of the current wave movement. These events can happen on the hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly time frames. A stock is classified as extensional by StockCaster under three conditions. First, if the price per share closes above the 100EMA, which is often the first indication of Wave 5 movement. Be careful however, because there is often a delay in upward movement after a stock triggers the close above the 100EMA scan. Another extensional event occurs when the previous period's 50 EMA is less than the previous period's 100 EMA, and the current period's 50 EMA is greater than the current period's 100 EMA. The third extensional signal measured by StockCaster occurs when the price per share closes above the 200EMA. The 200EMA is often seen as a major support point by traders and investors and movement above or below the 200EMA can be an important signal. The final scan in the extensional series looks for stocks that have demonstrated "sustained" growth. StockCaster's new ContinuedUp scan searches for stocks where the price per share is above the 13EMA and the 13EMA is above the 26EMA and the 26EMA is above the 50EMA and the EPS is greater than 1.00 dollar. This scan is of significant value to those securities and options traders who are analyzing stocks with a demonstrated history of stability and continued growth.

There are also several technical events that trigger "short" signals in stocks, meaning a potential decline in the price per share.

Short Signals: StockCaster provides four distinct short signal scans that represent the beginning of a decline (retracement) and the correction phase of movement. The first short signal occurs when the previous period's closing price is greater than the previous period's upper Bollinger band and the current period's closing price is less than the current period's upper Bollinger band.

The second short signal occurs when the previous period's closing price is greater than the previous period's 13 EMA and the current period's closing price is less than the current period's 13 EMA. These two signals indicate a retracement.

The third short signal is noted when the previous period's 3 EMA is greater than the previous period's 13 EMA and the current period's 3 EMA is less than the current period's 13 EMA. This represents movement into a correction phase of the wave.

The fourth short signal is indicated when the previous period's 13 EMA is greater than the previous period's 26 EMA and the current period's 13 EMA is less than the current period's 26 EMA.

The final short signal isn't a technical measure, but rather looks for trade dynamics and price movement. DVol Double $Down searches for stocks where demonstrated market pressure has resulted in a significant increase in total daily volume as compared to the previous day's trading and where the closing price was lower than the previous day's price. The purpose of this scan is to identify stocks experiencing a significant increase in trading (as evidenced by a surge in volume) but which closed lower, thereby signaling a negative movement based on the trading.
